V/H/S (2012)

Another 'found footage' horror film with 5 separate stories that is very poorly written, acted, paced, filled with terribly embellished gore, abysmal score, and asinine plot lines; I could go on, but it's hard to really come up with anything decent about this one.

Sisters (1973)

Brian De Palma's best film. It's pure Hitchcock with a heavy influence of cleverly added elements of Rear Window, Psycho and Vertigo; Even Hitch's favourite composer, Bernard Hermmann, came out of retirement to score the film. Tension packed and very meticulously paced.

Late Spring (1949)

With a very slight plot line and absolute ardent dialogue, few films express with as much force and lyricism the various emotions associated with the ongoing, perpetual dissolution of "the world as we know it" as this film does; Beautifully shot with gorgeous cinematography

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

Easily Anderson's most garish, exotic, and retro film in my opinion; The film is geared toward the shore of realism and has a very casual narrative premise which allows a lot of room for the character development to come through in a very sympathetic, narcissistic and loving way.

Rushmore (1998)

This is a perfect example of the effect a film as intricate and vibrantly vivid as this, with all it's eccentricity and love of grand gestures and its respect for the tiniest fluctuations can have on your emotions for an hour and a half. I am still brought to tears from this one.

Vampyr (1932)

This film is sheer fucking terror and acts as a stern reminder of death as the threshold of spiritual liberation. It's dark/gloomy colour and atmospheric camera shots maximizes the impact of the beautiful dreamlike quality of this nightmarish film that will stay with you for days

A Bullet for the General (1966)

This satirical Zapata/Spaghetti Western film is one of the absolute best I've ever seen in the genre; I'm putting this up against any Sergio Leone film. Amazing performances and surprises; The blu-ray transfer is phenomenal, I can't recommend this movie any higher!

Revanche (2008)

This cleverly paced film by Gotz Spielmann is a meditation on revenge that is extremely smart and has a very distinct tone that is mainly due to the superbly lucid, diamond-hard cinematography and dreamlike quality that makes you feel a bit claustrophobic when watching; So good

The 39 Steps (1935)

An everyman hero who’s the pursuer and the pursued. All the classic elements of a Hitchcock film are perfectly articulated here which stands as both the culmination of his career to date in the UK and the ideas for his other 'wrongly accused' films. This is a personal favourite.

Sweet Smell of Success (1957)

This IS the film noir of film noir's; It captures the brilliance and gorgeous tones of knife-edge bitterness and is a tour de force to a very unique blend of ceaseless virility and acting. Amazingly directed and has some of the best cinematography, this movie is pure cinema.

The Holy Mountain (1973)

A 280 character word review of the symbolic imagery that Jodorowsky employs, and even more, the multiplicity in the meanings of these symbols of this film will not do any sort of justice until you've actually sat down and experienced this film for all it's LSD induced brilliance.

Tokyo Drifter (1966)

A very colourful and energetic 1960s blast of Japanese pop culture paired with a complicated, satirical take on the Yakuza gang. Packed with wild imagery, action, and amazing cinematography, Suzuki’s bizarre crime film is very Warhol and a real treat for fans of the genre.

Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979)

One of the most influential zombie films I think that has ever been made, Lucio Fulci perfects his craft as Italy's best horror film director and packs in some of the most incredible gore scenes I have ever seen in the genre for it's time! This is zombie perfection with no filler

My Own Private Idaho (1991)

Gus Van Sant, what more can you want? This film takes you on an emotional journey through the lives of two street hustlers who's two fractured lives separate into their own trajectories. Beautifully written and non sequitur, this film deserves so much more recognition than it got
