Austin to Boston (2015)

the best music you'll never hear. and a really good look at what makes band life so addictive. like the craziest family. like fireworks. and fleetwood mac songs. goddamn. slow but beautiful.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

Yay for spy gadgets. Those are great. Less yay for the wildly - and weirdly - violent romp this turned out to be. I was expecting different. Also, kudos for the most patriotic ode to Scanners that I've ever seen. Bonus points for Samuel L Jackson's lisp.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2012)

Really lovely. Yes, there's a lot about fish, but also faith and doing impossible things and being lost. I don't think I've ever thought so highly about salmon before. Also, Lasse Hallstrom directed this. Obvious win.

Best Man Down (2012)

So. This is one of those indie comedies that isn't actually very funny. Or really, funny at all. There's a lovable Belushi-like character who dies, and then it's all what happens after that. Also, any movie that happens in Minn should take full advantage of that accent. Meh.

Frequencies (2013)

If Einstein wrote a love story, this would be that. But if that doesn't sell you, there's also secret gov't agencies, physics, the power of words, a dystopic-society-caste-system element and a lovely monologue about music. Loved it despite being fairly unclear on the ending.

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

Best film of the H.S. reunion genre. Dark & hilarious. I can't think of anyone other than Cusack who can make a professional killer affable, lovable even. Also, the soundtrack is the best thing that ever happened. ALL YES.
